Jackson School District Sues City Council

A legal fight has broken out between the school district and City Council over funding for schools in Mississippi's largest city.

The Clarion-Ledger reports that the Jackson Public School District filed a lawsuit against the Jackson City Council accusing the city of refusing to raise enough taxes to cover a budget request by the school board.

Council members were given copies of the suit earlier this week.

The suit, filed in Hinds County Circuit Court, challenges the council's Sept. 14 decision to raise taxes by 2.5 mills on the school system's behalf. The school board says that tax rate won't be enough to cover a budget request of $88.9 million.
