City officials in Meridian got demolition started Tuesday for the new Meridian Law Enforcement Center.
The ceremony was held at the old Cowboy Maloney building on 22nd Avenue.
Mayor Cheri Barry stresses that the city will not be borrowing money to finance the building. She says the city will lease the facility, and the money has already been set aside in the city's budget for the new building. The mayor says it will provide a better working environment for officers.
"They have been working in deplorable conditions conditions for many, many years," said Barry. "Mold growing out of the ceiling. Raccoons peaking down on them. They'll have new computers."
Actual construction on the new law enforcement center begins Wednesday. The facility is expected to be complete in early 2012.
