Meridian, Miss. Meridian Public Schools Wednesday unveiled a walking bridge and sidewalks at T.J. Harris Elementary School. It's part of a Mississippi Department of Transportation program called Safe Routes to School. The bridge crosses Gallagher Creek.
"We know how heavy the traffic is in our community when people are getting ready to go to work and coming from work, and so this keeps our children safe," said superintendent Dr. Alvin Taylor.
"I think this is the way to start young children off on the right path," said Dick Hall, Mississippi's central district transportation commissioner. "This facility is well-designed. It's well-built. I'm very proud of the way it turned out, and I think the whole community will be proud of it."
Taylor says he is hopeful more projects like this will be built in Meridian in the future.
