Fallen firefighters to be honored at memorial

Four Mississippi firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2015 will be honored Oct. 9 at the 35th Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.

They are among 79 firefighters who died in last year and 33 firefighters who died in previous years who will be remembered at the official national service in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Philadelphia Fire Department Capt. Dwight Greer, 44, died after he collapsed during required department physical fitness training May 6, 2015.

Engineering technician, Steve Cobb, 55, of the USDA Forest Service, DeSoto National Forest, died in a U.S. Forest Service helicopter crash while monitoring a controlled burn Mar. 30, 2015.

Capt. Willie B. Ratliff, 66, of the City of Clarksdale Fire Department died after required physical fitness training Dec. 21, 2015.

Ashland Volunteer Fire Department firefighter, John L. Shoup, 38, died Mar. 15, 2015, after suffering a heart attack while at the scene of a structure fire.

Their names will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

Families will receive flags flown over the U. S. Capitol and the National Memorial.

Meridian firefighter Eric Gustafson died in the line of duty Sept. 9, 2016. His name would be added to the national memorial in 2017.
