MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -The Meridian Police Department is kicking off Halloween festivities with its annual Spooktacular Trunk or Treat.

The free event is set for Thursday, Oct. 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at police headquarters at 510 22nd Ave. S.

The event is open to children ages 12 and under with a parent or guardian and will include candy, cotton candy, popcorn, a live DJ and a haunted van.

Citywide trick-or-treating in Meridian will be Saturday, Oct. 31.

Police are urging families to prioritize safety by having children stay with a responsible adult, wearing visible costumes, sticking to well-lit neighborhoods, using sidewalks and crosswalks, and checking candy before eating it.

Drivers are also being asked to slow down and watch closely for children and families that evening.

Assistant Police Chief Dareall Thompson says the events are a chance for officers to connect with the community while encouraging a fun and safe holiday for all.
